Pier Luigi Loro Piana’s new yacht is called “Masquenada” and is a 51-metre expedition yacht, with which the textile entrepreneur will now travel around the world together with his family.

It was delivered after an important 9-month refit by Lusben. The changes, designed by Nauta Design, mainly focused on the exterior design of the vessel, now radically transformed and extended to the stern, the complete redecoration of the interior, and the re-varnishing of the entire superstructure as well as parts of the hull.

During a private ceremony, which took place in Livorno, inside the Lusben shipyard, the 51-metre expedition yacht, the M/Y “Masquenada” was launched in the presence of its new owner, the fashion entrepreneur and passionate sailor, Pier Luigi Loro Piana.

The Lusben staff, the crew, architects, designers and the owner worked together in a laborious and intense refit which began in October 2020, with the aim of radically renewing the yacht, which was originally a working vessel. Now Masquenada has a proud hull, ideal for travelling the world in comfort.

The most important element of this entire design – declared Pier Luigi Loro Piana during his thank you speech at the launch – was time. Time is the most essential factor for an owner and I am enormously satisfied by the skill of the Lusben shipyard which, together with all the partners, was able to complete an incredible transformation in just a few short months. Now the plan for the immediate future is to go on board with my family and travel around the world.

The main transformation on the “Masquenada” was the removal and extension of the entire stern: as well as the addition of a transformer which doubled the available surface space for the beach area, the length of the Bridge and Upper Deck was increased by 1.5 metres for each deck. A particularly complex operation because at the beginning there was missing information like technical designs and electrical schematics, and it was therefore necessary to carry out a 3D scan of the yacht and take new measurements and surveys.

Also for the exterior decks, another important intervention requiring the redistribution of the layout and storage, was the removal of the deck crane on the Main Deck, leftover from the boat’s previous duty, and the installation of a new, more powerful crane below deck in the lazarette spaces. This solution, when the crane is inactive, creates a free space of approximately 200 square metres on the Main Deck.

The exterior décor was then completely changed, adapted to the needs of the owner who, in addition to personalised loose furniture, asked to remove the jacuzzi from the Sun Deck and instead add an outdoor cooking station.

Pier Luigi Loro Piana was the owner of the My Song, the unlucky sail boat lost at sea during a transfer from the Caribbean to Italy. In an interview with Liguria Nautica, Pier Luigi Loro Piana said he wanted to replace it with a vessel that was better suited to cruising. We didn’t imagine, though, that he was thinking of travelling around the world on an expedition yacht.
