The city of Naples has been chosen as the host for the next edition of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup
After Barcelona, the 38th edition of the America’s Cup, running through spring/summer 2027, will remain in the Mediterranean, and come for the first time ever, to Italy, in Naples. The announcement was made on 15 May and is a historic moment for Italian sailing: never, in its long history (the first edition took place in 1870), has this iconic race been hosted in Italy.
This announcement, shared by the New Zealand team, who are the current Defenders of the Cup, has come as a surprise, as, among the possible locations there were more well-known locations such as new Zealand, Valencia and Saudi Arabia. Rumour has it that Louis Vuitton, the main event sponsor, was strongly in favour of choosing Naples, and the Italian government acted promptly to bring the Cup “home”.
Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, also spoke after the announcement for Naples was made, “a global event – she noted – that involves millions of enthusiasts and represents a singular union between tradition, technological innovation, engineering excellence and competitive spirit,” also noting that “we are proud that they have chosen Italy, because it is a recognition of our country’s identity. Without the sea – she said – we wouldn’t be who we are.”
Also thrilled with the choice was Max Sirena, skipper and Team Director for Luna Rossa, the only (for now?) Italian team that has confirmed their participation in 2027. “It is great – said Sirena – because we will have so many supporters in the country, and, especially from the capital of Campagna, who, I am sure, will be cheering Luna Rossa on. I am sure that Naples will rise to the occasion for this important event.”
Confirming a race location is a decisive step for the America’s Cup, as noted by Max Sirena. “For us as a team – adds the skipper and Team Director for Luna Rossa – this is an important moment, because we can finally focus on the design and training based on the conditions we will find in the Gulf of Naples.”
Will Luna Rossa win the heart of the Neapolitan people by winning the most important sailing race in the world? We’ll find out in 2027.
