The global manager for the yachting segment of Lloyd’s Register explains to DN the importance of safety in the sector and the tools to implement them
During the World Yachting Summit in Monaco, fundamental questions on the future of yachting were discussed, including sustainability, which, however, complements other crucial aspects of the sector. Engel Jan de Boer, global manager for the yachting segment of Lloyd’s Register, and one of the speakers, talked to us.
“If there is no safety, there is no sustainability” notes de Boer, according to whom we need to understand the level of knowledge on the topic in order to then work on a new safety culture. During his interview with Daily Nautica, the global manager for the yachting segment of Lloyd’s Register also illustrated the tools used by Lloyd’s Register to increase safety in the yachting sector.
A new safety culture
“I strongly believe – notes Engel Jan de Boer – that the industry is currently blocked by a blaming culture. For me this is very unprofessional in terms of safety. In order to reach a professional level, you don’t have to just add more regulations, waiting for an accident to happen, then adding another regulation. We need to understand what point we are at and compare ourselves to other sectors.”
Tools
“On the first of April – says de Boer – we launched a survey on safety culture within the sector. We tried to include as many management companies, crews and captains as possible. It is a fairly extensive survey, based on science. Our company psychologists will analyse the results and we will publish them in order to understand what point we are at and what we need to do moving forward. We don’t need to just focus on sustainability, as fundamental as it is, but also on safety.”
