Over 321 miles sailed solo in 147 hours: a feat that combines sailing, sustainability and commitment to ocean conservation
Between the 12th and 18th, Dan Lenard, founder of the Vela Code Foundation and member of the Yacht Club de Monaco, completed an unprecedented solo crossing aboard a small Laser/ILCA dinghy. In 147 hours and 41 minutes of solo sailing, the naval architect covered 321.5 nautical miles, surpassing the previous record of 283.5 miles set in 2014.
The journey started and ended at D-Marin Marina Dalmacija in Croatia. It was tracked in real time via the YB Iridium Satellite Tracker system and Lenard’s personal Garmin GPS, engaging over 190,000 sailing enthusiasts across 38 countries. Professional witnesses, marina staff, and several yachts were present at both departure and arrival.
A message of sustainability from the sea
Beyond its sporting significance, the crossing aimed to deliver a strong, clear message: sailing can and must be an advocate for ocean protection. For this reason, Lenard did not use any single-use plastic on board. All provisions were stored in glass or aluminum containers, in line with the Vela Code Foundation’s mission.
“I’m proud that this record” – said Dan Lenard – “not only demonstrates the endurance and spirit of sailing but also sends a clear message: yachting can and must set an example in ocean protection. As a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco and through the Vela Code Foundation, my commitment is to raise awareness and inspire others to build a more responsible relationship with the sea.”

A record that becomes a symbol
Lenard’s feat has already garnered significant international media attention, reinforcing the visibility of the link between sailing and sustainability. The Vela Code Foundation will continue to promote this message of responsibility and awareness, showing how sport can be both performance and a tool for change. The Foundation also wished to thank the Yacht Club de Monaco for its support and for sharing in this achievement – an example of how the yachting world can lead the transition toward more sustainable sailing.
